Purchase or borrow a reference book to guide you in understanding the chemicals (we are exposed to over 60,000 a day!) that are in common places around the house (furniture, carpets, cleaning supplies…). There are several books suggested in the ‘recommended reading list’ section of the website. Begin to systematically remove the chemicals and ‘Green’ the areas in your home where your child spends the most time.
Start by purchasing or making your own ‘Green’ cleaning supplies.
Check out the website www.BeyondGoGreen.com
The 1st room to ‘Green’ in your home should be your child’s bedroom. Begin to think of this as a ‘healing space’ where your child will detoxify the chemical exposures of the day during eight hours of sleep. Regeneration can occur at the cellular level away from toxins and chronic chemical exposure.
It is a good idea to remove the carpet in your child’s bedroom. Carpets and carpet pads contain lead, aluminum, propolene, and other chemicals. Natural fiber area rugs made of cotton or wool are fine. A laminate floor is better than having carpet.
If you are painting your child’s room or furniture use only paint that has NO-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) – the new paint smell is really a toxic chemical.
Consider purchasing an air purifier (Oreck is a good one). Do not purchase an ionizer (this can create mutations in mold and bacteria in the house). You want the air to simply be cleaned. Be sure to check/change the vents on the heating and cooling system in your home regularly.
EMFs
Any discussion of ‘creating a space to heal’ needs to include information about EMFs (Electro Magnetic Frequency) – the invisible electrical ‘energy’ that is created from electrical power grids and towers, wireless devices, cell phones, computers, and satellites, even microwave ovens and electric clocks. Many people (especially our kids) may be sensitive to this as it is theorized that EMFs may affect the nervous system. Please visit Dr. Mercola’s excellent website link to become informed about this important topic: www.emf.mercola.com/sites/emf/emf-dangers.aspx. Dr. Mercola explains how back in 1990 the EPA recommended that EMFs be classified as a ‘Class B’ carcinogen, a “probable human carcinogen and join the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs.” Unfortunately, lobbyists prevented this form being labeled as a Class B carcinogen, so the dangers of EMFs remain an official ‘theory’ according to the government. If you would like to know more about the history and discovery of EMFs, a very informative website is: www.spaceandmotion.com/physics-electromagnetic-waves-field-theory.htm .
One way to assure that the child’s bedroom is a ‘healing space’ – away from EMFs is to have an electrician wire the child’s room so that it operates on its own breaker. This can then be shut off at night. Try not to have computers and cell phones plugged into the wall in the room on the other side of the child’s room – the electricity will run through the wall in the child’s room. If the child’s bed or any part of the bed frame is made of metal – the metal will became a conductor for these unseen electrical currents. This includes the metal coils in the mattress and box spring. Foam or air mattresses would be a better choice.
Consider purchasing an EMF blocker for your home and cell phones. www.earthcalm.com
The blue stone Lapis Lazuli is believed to possess minerals that protect against EMF exposure. It’s good to put some of these rocks near your computer.
Emotional Healing
The time between going to bed and going to sleep can be an opportunity to establish some healing routines for your child. There is a company called Hemi Sync – Metamusic, www.Hemi-Sync.com which has created a line of music CDs to stimulate the different brainwave patterns that cross the two brain hemispheres. This is nice to play quietly while the child is falling asleep and possibly to have on ‘continuous play’. Many people like Quantum Healing and Dreamer’s Journey. These are also available at Amazon.com.
When a child is in recovery from a ‘spectrum disorder’ the whole evening routine which is usually characterized by ‘bath, book, and bed’ needs to take on a deeper and more important significance. Start this early, devote this time to your child. Begin to value your child’s sleep in their ‘healing space’ as precious time – and begin to prepare them for it. Remember, our children are suffering from a social / emotional disorder. We can treat their bodies and give supplements and vitamins for their brains, but how can we help them emotionally and spiritually? Explore this with your child each evening. Let the last thing they hear be blessings and praise, tell them about the wonderful and complete person that they are. Remind them that they are teaching you so much about life, love, balance, and good health. Use this time to massage their feet (reflexology), stimulate acupressure points (meridians), and use essential oils on the bottoms of the feet, pulse points, or at the base of the skull. There is tremendous physical and emotional healing in the feet. Learn where to rub and touch your child’s feet to stimulate energy and blood flow to major organs. www.reflexologywi.org/foot-small.
Dr. Ryke Hamer has developed a theory called ‘Recall Healing’. He suggests that a person’s brain and spirit are very receptive to spoken words during sleep. To try this with your child, go back into their room after they are asleep and talk to them on an emotional level. Reinforce positive messages, ask their forgiveness if it’s appropriate (we all lose our tempers sometimes), encourage them to allow their bodies to heal and ask them to talk to you when they are ready – tell them how much you want to hear what they have to say
