Chinese Proverb – Food is Medicine
Organics, Organics, Organics – as much as possible! Organic foods are grown from seeds that are non-Genetically Modified Organisms. Learn about GMO's at www.responsibletechnology.org. See the Movie Food Inc. as a family.
All meats consumed by your child should be organic, and beef should be grass-fed. Any fish consumed should be 'wild caught' – not 'farm raised'. An initial good cow's milk substitute is organic almond milk. Drink high quality water (www.mercola.com/article/water.htm)
Apples: High in malic acid, which helps to detoxify aluminum.
Bananas: Large amounts of potassium and B vitamins, creates an alkaline gut.
Broccoli: High in vitamin C, and promotes anti-bacterial, -viral, and -cancer activity.
Butternut squash: High in fiber, vitamins A,C, and E, manganese and magnesium – these can be made into French fries, which are more nutritious than potatoes.
Carrots: Rich in calcium, vitamins A and C. Keeps the intestines clean from bad bacteria. Excellent for eyes, skin, and teeth.
Grapes: Stimulates the life force in the body (Ayurvedic medicine), aids digestion.
Pineapple: Cures anxiety and aids digestion.
Papaya: Excellent for digestion, good cure for intestinal worms.
Raisins: Richest source of glucose – which aids the production of energy.
Romaine or Herb Lettuce, and Spinach: Rich in Vitamin A
Almonds: The best quality protein and fat. High in B vitamins, which means that they are beneficial to the nervous system as well as the brain. Almonds are free from bacteria (their oil prevents them from fermenting, unlike peanuts which may carry mold). Raw almond, macadamia nut, and cashew butters can be beneficial. Peanut butter is acceptable (though not as nutritious as the other nut butters) as long as your child is free of peanut allergies.
Cashews: The second highest nutritious nut, also high in B vitamins.
Raw Manuka Honey: Antibacterial properties, available at health foods stores or online.
Salt: Replace iodized table salt with a high quality sea salt, which is full of trace minerals. Iodine can be obtained by sprinkling organic dulse granules (seaweed flakes) on food in addition to sea salt.
Cilantro: A natural chelator of mercury.
Garlic: A natural antifungal.
Ginger: Protects against constipation and diarrhea, also can help with anxiety.
Turmeric: (Curcumin) – Protects the brain from inflammation.
Lentils: high in lysine (anti-viral properties); when sprouted, lentils are high in the building block amino acids methionine and cysteine. Sprouted grain corn tortillas are excellent along with a variety of beans. Remember that the combination of beans and rice make a complete protein.
Good starch alternatives to wheat: Potatoes (white, red, and sweet), rice (brown and white) amaranth, quinoa. Organic rice based pastas are excellent! A starch combined with vegetables is an excellent food combination to enhance digestion efficiently. It is also a great idea to eat fruit by itself or on an empty stomach. Fruit slows down digestion and causes the food to ferment in the digestive tract – feeding the 'bad' yeast in the gut. To read more about this read Donna Gates' book The Body Ecology Diet.
Give your child a high quality probiotic.
Teach your child to eat a few bites daily of a fermented food such as raw sauerkraut, 'Bubbies' pickles, or kimchi – rich in natural probiotics (found in health food stores).
Introduce raw goat's milk yogurt – made at home (www.pecanbread.com)
Introduce coconut kefir – can be fermented at home or purchased online, also called Cocobiotic (www.bodyecologydiet.com).
